Genesis of Disco

The Advent Of Disco

Disco has often been interpreted by musicologists as a creation and money spinner of the entertainment industry. However this is unfair since at its inception, disco was not seen a fit for large record companies and it was only as it got bigger, that the larger labels decided to jump on the bandwagon. When looking at possible catalysts for Disco, one should look at the state of New York at the time, it represented everything that was wrong in America: corruption, rapes, robberies, drug trafficking, garbage, murder, strife between blacks and whites, intolerance and violence of any kind.

This is seen in films such as “The violent arm of the law”, “Taxi Driver” and “Death Wish”, in which you can get a clear picture of the atmosphere in New York at that time?

All short, Disco was born out of the atmosphere of the time The disc comes from the fusion of contradictory impulses: exclusion and inclusion, luxury and extravagance, acquisition and abandonment, engagement and disengagement, seriousness and frivolity.

Along the way, Disco was trapped between different worlds … “homosexuality and heterosexuality” … “black and white” …

In this image of New York in a state of disrepair, Disco emerged from those who tried to recapture the city. The artists and local musicians began to use any type of space left. Thus was born the scene of the “loft jazz” made of free jazz musicians who gathered in abandoned loft. And “The Loft” was recognized as the first nightclub in New York; David Mancuso, its creator, became the father of the clubs.

Disco seemed to be completely out of tune with the time around it, a time of politics and protest. However in in the 70s laws made it difficult for African-Americans, Hispanics and Homosexuals to consume disco in public places. In response, much of the first Disco parties were ‘private’ events by invitation only, where the clandestine elements were accompanied by liberal amounts of illicit drug use.

The Disco, Integration and Freedom

The dance floor was a public place, polymorph, poly racial and poly sexual, free from the the influence of the state, church or family.
