Donna Gaines, her real name\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">She was born in Boston on December 31st\u2014I shall not mention the year, as she is a queen\u2026 She sang her way into the cast of \u201cHair\u201d in the late 1960s, touring in Germany and practically never returning to the United States\u2026 She found love in Austria with actor Helmut Sommer, whose name she took after Americanizing it to \u201cSummer.\u201d It was also in Germany that she began frequenting the Music Land Studios of a certain Giorgio Moroder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The first singles recorded with him were \u201cHostage\u201d and \u201cLady of the Night,\u201d but it wasn&#8217;t until 1975 that she exploded with \u201cLove to Love You Baby,\u201d 16 minutes of Moroder\u2019s pure genius\u2026 From then on, everything the duo produced turned to gold\u2026 \u201cI Feel Love,\u201d \u201cMacArthur Park,\u201d \u201cBad Girls,\u201d \u201cHot Stuff,\u201d \u201cSunset People,\u201d \u201cDim All the Lights,\u201d and many others, including the standout \u201cLast Dance,\u201d which earned them both an Oscar as the soundtrack to \u201cThank God It\u2019s Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Donna also managed her career exceptionally well after the disco era: exploring pop (the legendary duet with Barbra Streisand in \u201cNo More Tears\u201d) and funk, even venturing into rock. We love the Queen, however, for what she gave us between 1975 and 1979.
