<\/b>Dear Discolovers, today we remember an artist who was a symbol, an icon, a legend of art and the 1970s: Andy Warhol. Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of the passing of this great artist, who died in New York on February 22, 1987, following gallbladder surgery.<\/p>\n
The father of Pop Art is one of the most highly valued artists of the 20th century, and the market for his works continues to grow year after year, confirming the magnitude of his creative genius, capable of leaving an indelible mark on an entire era. Andrew Warhola (his real name) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 1928, to a family of Ruthenian ethnicity who had emigrated from Slovakia to the United States. Aware of his own talent, after graduating high school he enrolled at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, where he studied painting and design. After graduation, in 1949, he moved to New York. There, in a short time, he established himself in the advertising world, working for magazines such as ‘Vogue’ and ‘Glamour’. However, his career in the art world only began around 1960, when he started creating his first paintings, which drew inspiration from comics and advertising imagery. Warhol’s work immediately aligned with the Pop Art movement, which was emerging during those years in England and the United States, though still blending with informal art and abstraction. Elements that Warhol swept away when, in 1962, he began using the silkscreen technique and turned his attention to the ‘iconic symbols’ of his time. The success was overwhelming. Warhol also addressed themes of strong impact and drama, as in the ‘Car Crash’ series and the Electric Chair, but equally disturbing are the portraits of celebrities captured on canvas with the expressionless gaze of saints and madonnas. Sensing the multiple influences of underground culture, the artist founded the legendary ‘Factory’, which became a meeting place for new generations in the 1980s, from Keith Haring to Jean-Michel Basquiat. Alive by miracle after the attack by Valery Solanas, Warhol founded the magazine ‘Interview’, dedicated to the world of cinema with the formula of celebrities interviewing celebrities. From the 1970s until his death, Warhol created between 50 and 100 portraits per year, and his images of Campbell’s and Brillo were exhibited in museums around the world. His final destination was Europe, Paris and Milan, where, between January 18 and 24, 1987, he presented one of his obsessions, the series dedicated to Leonardo’s “Last Supper”. Upon returning to the United States, on February 17 he suffered from biliary colic. After undergoing gallbladder surgery at New York Hospital on February 21, he died the following morning. On this twenty-fifth anniversary, Italy pays tribute to him with many initiatives. His presence is essential in the numerous exhibitions currently underway on American avant-garde movements (at Palazzo delle Esposizioni, which presents a work from the ‘Electric Chair’ series, or in San Marino, where there is a beautiful Jackie). And entirely dedicated to Warhol is ‘From Appearance to Transcendence’, running until March 11 at the Saint-Benin Center in Aosta, showcasing his most famous works. In anticipation of ‘Andy Warhol Headlines’ (‘Andy Warhol and the Media’), in Rome from June 12 in the spaces of the National Gallery of Modern Art, which (thanks to collaboration with major American museums) for the first time brings together works focused on linguistic symbols rather than icons.
