A jacket that made music history is up for auction

Michael_Jackson's_Thriller_jacketDo you remember that red and black leather jacket? Yes, that very jacket worn by Michael Jackson in the Thriller video, the jacket that made history and is now up for auction.

The King of Pop had donated it to Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, and on June 25 and 26 it will be auctioned at Julien’s Auctions Gallery in Beverly Hills. The value of the accessory? Between $200,000 and $400,000. With just a few days remaining until the second anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death, preparations are underway worldwide to celebrate the memory of the King of Pop. But June 25 will also mark an important date for memorabilia enthusiasts, who on that very date will be able to witness the auction of the famous red leather jacket worn by Jackson in the Thriller video. A jacket made even more precious by the fact that it was autographed by the King of Pop, who had given it to his costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush. Why did that jacket make history? Well, it’s simple: suffice it to say that Thriller is Michael Jackson’s sixth studio album, released in 1982, and with this record the singer achieved maximum fame. Furthermore, it is the best-selling album in music history, with 113 million copies sold since its release year and still averaging approximately 500,000 copies sold annually.

Thriller is also the only album in music history to have surpassed the milestone of 100 million copies sold. But on June 25 and 26 in Beverly Hills, not only the legendary red leather jacket will be auctioned, but also a glove belonging to the pop star (for only $20,000), a hat used during filming (very affordable at $2,000), and finally, the wig used for the “This Is It” tour presentation ($6,000). Part of the proceeds from the jacket will go to the Shambala reserve, current home of the tigers that lived with Jackson at Neverland.

And how much would you be willing to spend for a memento of one of your idols?
