It is very difficult to find a definition of DISCO MUSIC, but let us try! The musical formula of disco refers to danceable music based on a four-on-the-floor rhythm. The bass and drums were more prominent compared to rock. The fact that the rhythm sidelined the key symbols of rock authority—the guitar and the lead vocals—posed a significant challenge to established identities: while rock was dominated by white heterosexuals, disco teemed with African Americans, women, and gay people.
A rhythm between 95 and 125 beats per minute (bpm) · a captivating, catchy melody · a rhythmic configuration almost always characterized by the classic ‘four-on-the-floor’ kick drum (one beat every measure, which with typical 4/4 time signatures meant four beats per bar) and the hi-hat on the ‘off-beat’ (see YMCA).
Disco featured first-rate musicians, producers, and record labels; nothing was improvised. Some had the skill to create and direct the phenomenon, while others ‘only’ knew how to exploit it. There were also improvisers who achieved a lucky chart hit, but… disco was a matter for professionals, not for adventurers or amateurs in over their heads.
