Women’s Fashion Accessories in the 70s: Hats

image1-3Dear Discolovers, how about we talk about 70s accessories today? I thought I would suggest the topic of hats! We have often worn them at our “I Love Disco” parties! In the early 70s, hats were widely fashionable.

So what were hats like in the 70s? Certainly colorful and exaggerated, like all fashion during that period of great ferment. From the small hats of the 60s, in fact, we had moved on to medium and large-sized hats. Often the brims were semi-drooping and wide, the so-called cloches. The absence of internal reinforcements gave the felt a certain mobility, so the brims swayed with the movements of the head. But there were not only hats with large brims. Very popular were hats perhaps a bit smaller but with strange shapes and almost no brims: like Indian headdresses.image4 image2-3

From hippy fashion came the forerunner of today’s bandana: a strip of fabric that wrapped around the head and hair. It was also often used simply as a hair tie.
Towards the end of the 70s, the fashion for caps emerged among younger girls: a real cap made of elasticized material (similar in appearance to those used in swimming pools). Now the fashion for hats has certainly returned, but not as dominant as it was then, having lost all memory of 70s hats, but do you remember them? Did you wear them? I remember the scarves that my mother always wore around her head….
