The name originates simply from the initials of the four group members: Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, and Anni-Frid (later better known as Frida). Formed in 1969 in Sweden, they were far removed, in every sense, from the early New York disco scene; nevertheless, their pop tracks earned them a rightful place in the pantheon of disco music.

Their “Dancing Queen” became an anthem for the gay movement, a status it retains to this day. Their musical immortality was further cemented in recent times by Madonna, who sampled the classic track “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” in her song “Hung Up.” The group was also marked by the romance and marriages between Agnetha and Bjorn, and Benny and Frida, which eventually ended in divorce, signaling the group’s decline toward the end of the 1980s.

Today, an infinite number of greatest hits remain, which they began producing in the 1970s and which are still highly popular. Frida also enjoyed a modest solo career, particularly with the song “I Know There’s Something Going On.”
